Read first, or watch first?
For a horse-mad kid, skip the movie question entirely and just start the book; the chapters are short, the words are plain, and the narrator is a horse, which is the entire sales pitch. The 1994 film keeps Beauty's narration and works as a gentle companion afterward. Read the content note first either way: Sewell does not look away from cruelty, some chapters are genuinely sad, and that weight is exactly what the book was written to carry.
